Adventures along California’s Central Coast

The rolling green hills of San Luis Obispo County and California’s central coast can take your breath away as you drive up Highway 101 along the azure blue crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. There is more to do along the Santa Lucia Mountain Range then just touristy Hearst Castle, the Madonna Inn and the giant aquarium in Monterey. Hike the trails of Carmel, visit with Elephant Seals beachside, explore giant sand dunes and mountain bike in eucalyptus forests on this seaside road trip.

Mexico’s Volcano, Nevado de Toluca 15k’er

I’m lying in snow, 14,000 feet above sea level on a volcano known as Nevado de Toluca, when I feel warm breath against my hand. Exhale, groan, roll over. It’s a dog, come to investigate my motionless form. “Good dog,” I slur and raise a hand to pat her head. Her name is Maya, I think, and she’s been tagging along with our hiking group since this morning.

Minnesota’s Art Shanty Projects

A 12-foot polar bear slowly lumbers across the frozen lake.  Two heavily bundled children shout gleefully as they bounce each other up and down on a Ouijatotter.  College students dance their cares (and thick winter shells) away in a small hut pounding with music.  All this and more is par for the course at Minnesota’s Art Shanty Projects, an annual experiment in public art and community.
